Kasauli is one of the most popular hill stations of Himachal Pradesh. The town is widely known for its commanding site. It has a panoramic view of the Plains, on one hand and the lofty snow clad Greater Himalayas, on the other. The Cantonment Town of Kasauli possesses a vital colonial heritage. Due to proximity to the Plains, a large number of tourists visit the place. Kasauli cantonment was established in the year 1850.The emergence of the Cantonment Board as a municipal body in cantonments was basically in response to the need for maintenance of proper sanitation, health and hygiene in these areas. The scope of the Cantonment Board functions extends to the entire gamut of municipal administration. In addition to provide basic amenities, Cantonment Board, Kasauli also manages public welfare institutions and facilities to the residents of the cantonment area. At present total area of the cantonment is 688.0626 acres. As per census of 2011 the total population of the Cantonment is 3885 .Kasauli Cantonment Board is categorized as Class III Cantonment with 6 wards and comprises of 12 members giving an equal representation to Elected and official members.

Overview

The Kasauli Cantonment was established by the British Raj in 1850 as a Colonial hill station,77 km from Shimla, 65 km from Chandigarh, and 94 km from Ambala Cantt (Haryana), an important Railway Junction of North India .The town is a health resort, having an elevation of 1,900 metres above sea level.

The legend of the town states that it came into existence after Lord Hanuman placed his feet here in order to advance on to the Sanjeevani hill. The place where the lord actually kept his feet is believed to be at a hillock which is 300 m high. Historically, Kasauli is one of those hill stations that was developed by the British empire during its peak period in India.

Kasauli is well wooded with many varities of trees,mostly pines,deodars,horse chestnuts and wild cherries.

Kasauli has a moderate climate. Winter temperature is approximately 2 degrees Celsius, with Summer temperatures rarely exceeding 32 degrees Celsius or more. The general wind direction is south-west to north-east. Total rainfall for the year is 1020 millimetres, with humidity at 90% in September and 28% in April.
